Google docs

Just beginning to think about the possibility of using Google Docs - maybe for updating plant species lists for particular sites.
Could also be used maybe for Library event bookings.... lots of potential.

I've been looking at del.icio.us and have added a couple of bookmarks. It's a very useful tool.

Gardening Australia

Just added link to Gardening Australia. Looks like some interesting content.

RSS Feeds

I've signed up on Bloglines and found some sites to connect to. I'm not finding much to do with Australian gardening that I can link to - will keep looking. Some of the links are a bit disappointing - too much random trivia. UA library link shows their new Botany books -this could be useful.

Facebook uses

IF I get time next year, I might create a Facebook site for the Glasshouse Country Garden Expo. I guess if IFLA can do it, so can I. Though I must admit, my personal experience of Facebook has been disappointing. Very strange people ask me to be their friend.

A wiki would be useful

I've just been looking at some interesting wikis. They have the advantage over blogs in that they can be a lot more interactive and cooperative. I think a wiki in which people could write reviews on new Australian botany and gardening books would be very useful. It is often hard to find out about small publications on local flora. A pupose built wiki would allow all plant lovers to pool their knowledge about new publications and write reviews. I'm sure many library users who enjoy reading plant books and also acquisitions staff would use such a wiki.
Maybe when I get some spare time...........!!!

Glasshouse Country Garden Expo

Glasshouse Country Garden Expo will be held on Sunday 24th May, 9am to 4pm. This expo started four years ago as an initiative of Beerwah Library staff and it has grown to become a huge event. It's a great place to buy plants, see displays, hear experts and have fun. Beerwah Library will be open on the day and the library will also have a display in the Community Hall. There will be lots of gardening books on display.

Bush foods for the home garden

These native plants are suitable for the home garden and provide edible fruit.

Austromyrtus dulcis (midyim berry) occurs naturally near the coast. The small berries are delicious. The plant grows to about 1 metre in height.

Carissa ovata is a sprawling shrub that has pretty white flowers and small blackish berries. Birds usually get to the fruit first.

Melastoma affine grows to about 2.5 metres and flowers profusely. The purple flowers are nicer than the red fruit which will stain your tongue blue if you eat too many.

Great new book

"Grasses: native and introduced grasses of the Noosa biosphere reserve and surrounding regions" by Sonia MacDonald and Stephanie Haslam. Available from Noosa Integrated Catchment Management PO Box 172, Tewantin, QLD 4565.
The (over 100) illustrations in this book are from scanned pressed samples.
